Conservative traders, natural selection and market efficiency
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper examines the impact of conservative traders on market efficiency in an evolutionary model of a commodity futures market. This paper shows that the long-run market outcome is informationally efficient, as long as in every period there is a positive probability that entering traders are more conservative than their predecessors. Conservative traders are those who correctly predict the spot price with a positive probability, and more importantly, who in their mistakes err on the side of caution, and rarely overpredict the spot price as buyers, and underpredict the spot price as sellers. This result does not require entry of traders with better information than their predecessors. © 2011 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. JEL classification: G13; G14; D8

Natural Selection and Market Efficiency in a Futures Market with Random Shocks
Even when participants know very little about their environment, the market itself, by serving as a selection process of information, promotes an efficient aggregate outcome. To emphasize the role of the market and the importance of natural selection rather than the strategic actions of participants, an evolutionary model of a commodity futures market is presented, in which there is a continual...
متن کاملEvolution, efficiency and noise traders in a one-sided auction market ¬リニ
Natural selection is used to examine a one-sided buyer auction market. With each trader’s behavior preprogrammed with its own inherent and fixed probabilities of overpredicting, predicting correctly and underpredicting the fundamental value of the asset, informational efficiency occurs. If each buyer’s initial wealth is sufficiently small relative to the market supply and if the variation in th...
متن کاملThe Opportunity for Conspiracy in Asset Markets Organized with Dealer Intermediaries
This article reports an asset market experiment in which asymmetrically informed traders transact through competing dealers. Dealers face a classic adverse selection problem, because some traders have private information regarding the asset value while other traders are uninformed. When dealers cannot communicate outside the market, they price the asset competitively and the market is generally...
متن کاملBi-directional double auction for financial market simulation
Typical Double Auction (DA) models assume that trading agents are one-way traders. With this limitation, they cannot directly reflect the fact individual traders in financial markets (the most popular application of double auction) choose their trading directions dynamically. To address this issue, we introduce the Bi-directional Double Auction (BDA) market which is populated by two-way traders...

One main idea descri...
